One of  my absolute favorite experiences kayaking happened on the Douro River when we paddled through a lock. We dropped 70 feet before coming out to the face of a cliff. Then we took a sharp right turn past a boat full of tourists waiting to go into the lock. Their spontaneous applause was a pleasant surprise. I've been on a quest for lock experiences ever since!
